Overview

The Google homepage has a series of “Doodles” that are presented every day to the user. Each “Doodle” highlights a holiday, person, or other event. They display on the dates the event has been associated with. When a user wants to search through the Google Doodle Archives, they are presented with three different options: “Interactive,” “This day in history,” and “Featured.”

Throughout the course, I have researched, browsed, and briefly tested a new way to organize these Google Doodles for a better user experience.

Research and Deliverables

Brainstorming: I went through to discover the different features that stood out to me. I took that and organized it into a mind map so I can easily organize that different ideas. I even looked at different sites that had similar structures to the information I found.

Faceted Classification: Faceted research is a technique used to give the users the ability to find items based on more than one dimension. The researcher that is organizing their work into a faceted structure will constantly ask themselves, “How can I describe this?” This technique allowed me to create the following facets for my Google Doodle Archive.

Pick List: The pick list is a limited set of terms arranged in an order that is logical and easy for the user to understand. After choosing the facets, I needed to create a pick-list for each. I want to limit the number of possibilities for the user so they do not get lost or confused during their search.

Synonym Rings: Synonym rings are created to ensure that the value or the pick lists are clear and unique. I assembled synonym rings to control the synonyms and equivalents of the values in the list.

Taxonomy: A taxonomy is a classification scheme that is complex and varies greatly. To keep it simple, how can I show the organization without confusing the user? This is one of the most important steps because once the taxonomy scheme has been chosen, it becomes permanent.

Semantic Network: A semantic network is used to show the relationships between ‘resources’ so we know what type of data is being linked.
